Psychological Reports for Criminal Injuries Compensation - Perth
Being harmed by a crime can affect far more than your physical health. Many people live with fear, disrupted sleep, flashbacks, low mood or difficulty trusting others long after the event. In Western Australia, the law recognises this harm. An independent psychological report can help show the Assessor how the offence has affected you.
At Wellmind Psychology, we prepare clear, objective reports for people applying for compensation under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003 (WA).
Who We Can Help
We assess adults [and young people] who have experienced psychological harm after an offence in WA, including:
Physical or sexual assault
Family and domestic violence
Childhood abuse, including historical abuse
Robbery, threats or stalking
The loss of a close family member through a criminal act
About The WA Scheme
Applications are made to the Office of Criminal Injuries Compensation and decided by an independent Assessor. Compensation may cover:
Pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life
Past and future treatment costs, including psychological therapy
Lost income
Report fees and other reasonable out-of-pocket expenses
Funeral costs, for close relatives of a person who died as a result of an offence
The maximum award is generally $75,000 for a single offence, or up to $150,000 where one offender committed several offences against you. Time limits apply, so we recommend getting legal advice early.
What Our Report Covers
Your report gives the Assessor a professional opinion on:
Your mental health before and after the offence
Any psychological conditions linked to the offence, such as PTSD, depression or anxiety
How your symptoms affect your work, relationships and daily life
Your likely recovery and prognosis
Recommended treatment and its estimated cost
How The Process Works
Get in touch. Contact us yourself or ask your lawyer to refer you. If a lawyer represents you, we'll take instructions from them.
Send your documents. Helpful documents include your victim impact statement, police or court documents such as a statement of material facts or sentencing remarks, and any medical reports.
Attend your assessment. You'll meet with one of our psychologists in a safe, unhurried setting. This may involve one or more sessions and some standardised questionnaires. You can take breaks at any time.
Receive your report. Your psychologist prepares a written report, which is sent to you or your lawyer to include with your application.
Fees and Funding
Our criminal injuries compensation reports start at $2,750 (including GST). The final fee depends on the complexity of your matter, such as the number of offences, the time period involved and how many assessment sessions are needed. We'll give you a written quote before any work begins.
You may be able to apply to the Office of Criminal Injuries Compensation for an interim payment to help cover the report. If the interim payment doesn't cover the full fee, the remaining amount can usually be claimed as an expense in your final application. Report fees are not covered by Medicare.
Common Questions
Do I need a lawyer?
No. You can apply yourself, and we accept self-referrals. A lawyer can still be very helpful with complex claims, time limits and appeals. Wellmind Psychology cannot give legal advice.
Can my regular psychologist write the report?
Sometimes, but the Assessor often gives more weight to an independent assessment. Ask your lawyer or the Office which type of report suits your claim.
Can I get counselling as well?
Yes. Support is available while your claim is being assessed, which can take many months. Your treatment costs may also be claimable.
